"Hobo Jim" aka Jim Varsos was named Alaska's official balladeer in 1994 and holds that title to this day. Hobo Jim is a singer songwriter who was born in the lower 48 and hitchhiked up to Alaska where he stayed. His songs are primarily about regions of the state and occupations such as logging, fishing, and mining. The best known of his songs commemorates the Iditarod Dog Sled Race. Hobo Jim is beloved by many Alaskans and considered a state treasure.
